Introducing: "Sankofa," a 16"x 20" oil on canvas. The Sankofa bird appears frequently in traditional Akan art and has also been adopted as an important symbol in the African-American and African Diaspora contexts to represent the need to reflect on the past to build a successful future. I challenged myself to represent this tradition using my signature style of Plasticism. By taking artistic license, I abstracted the bird to create a flurry of motion, and the background represents the chicken wire enclosure, highlighting the lack of freedom that Black people experience in many ways.
