Rosalind Nzinga Vaughn-Nichol is a mixed-media artist, papermaker, and visual storyteller whose richly layered practice explores memory, ancestry, spirituality, history, and the complexities of African American and African Diasporic identity. Working across handmade paper, painting, collage, textiles, quilting, and repurposed materials, Nichol creates works that operate as both contemporary expressions and vessels of cultural memory.

Born in Indianapolis, Nichol grew up within a multigenerational family of makers whose traditions included textile work, carpentry, masonry, ceramics, crochet, and embroidery. 

Those early experiences continue to inform her material language. Papermaking became central to her practice in the early 2000s, evolving into a process through which she embeds antique lace, textiles, fibers, and other materials into handmade paper. These elements carry their own histories, allowing Nichol to construct compositions in which material, memory, and narrative become inseparable.

At the heart of Nichol’s practice is storytelling. Her predominantly abstract works draw upon personal experiences, spiritual references, African Diasporic iconography, and historical research to examine how the past continues to inhabit the present. Rather than offering fixed narratives, she creates layered visual spaces that invite viewers to consider ancestry, cultural inheritance, resilience, and our responsibility to remember.

Nichol studied drawing and painting at Herron School of Art and Design and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from California State University, Long Beach. She also holds graduate degrees in education and pastoral care. Her work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including at the Newark Museum of Art, Morris Museum, Montclair Art Museum, National Liberty Museum,The Colored Girls Museum, and Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. Her work is held in public, corporate, and private collections, including Novartis North American Headquarters, Atlantic Health Breast Centers, and the Mahn Center for Archives & Special Collections.

Across more than four decades of artistic practice, Nichol has developed a visual language that connects generations—transforming paper, cloth, found materials, history, and memory into contemporary artifacts of remembrance. Her work asks us not simply to look backward, but to consider what we carry forward.
