Reports of cleavers’ medicinal properties include the ability to move the lymph, reduce swelling, and clear the skin while practitioners of magic use cleavers in “binding spells and matters of commitment.” The word cleave is a contronym; it has two contradictory meanings, each its own opposite. Cleave can mean both “stick together” and “split apart.”
