Ditas de Borikén by Lucy Giboyeaux

Made from Made from fabric, Birch Wood, felt, cardboard + cinnamon and resin (to render the roof), epoxy clay, non-toxic fabric hardener. To make the small "ditas" vessels, I used shells of "quenepas asiaticas" (Kohala longan fruit) I dried from my last trip to Puerto Rico.

Inspiration:

"I was inspired by an old friend I found selling vegetables and fruit on the side of the road in Puerto Rico in a shanty fruit stand. After a long conversation with him I discovered we are related. He's been selling vegetables for over 40 yrs. My mother and I bought vegetables from him and with his old arthritic hands he whipped out his smart phone to do the math while captivating us with stories. Love him!"

Materials:
The traditional Puerto Rican "Dita” are bowls made from the dried-out shell of a coconut, also the larger Dita in Taino language "Batea" is often made of the Higuera fruit tree. The Higuera tree of Puerto Rico bears a hard-shelled fruit which has been crafted into eating vessels, musical instruments for centuries.
