"Our Wishes" by Alejandra Abad, 2022. Created in partnership with the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art and the artist.
Acquired through a grant funded by the Science & Cultural Facilities District. BMoCA applied for the grant, and chose Bemis Public Library as the project site in Arapahoe County. Paid for by SCFD. Six artists were considered, and Alejandra Abad's "Our Wishes" project was selected. The library collected community responses to the question "What do you hope/dream for the future of your community" throughout the month of June, 2022, and the artist, Alejandra, chose ten of the responses. She created hand-dyed silk banners, and cut out fabric letters for all of the phrases. TheStudio@Bemis, a makerspace, hosted the artist for five sessions where the community could come help her assemble the flags.
The banners were installed on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 in the entrance hall of the library. They will stay up at least through the end of September 2022, and possibly longer. An additional activity for children to be hosted in August, 2022, by the education coordinator for BMoCA, assisting children to make their own "hopes & dreams" flags.
