"Sunny Things Happen" is a small, bright reminder that even the quietest corners can sprout joy. The little sunflowers lean into the fence line with a cheerful, determined spirit so typical of sunflowers. These came up along our fence, apparently from last years' sunflowers gone to seed so they proved a little wild and stubbornly hopeful in the Central Texas summer heat. What's not to love about a flower that volunteers to blossom outside the flowerbed but against the fence and out of the way? Jim was careful not to mow it down. We left the spent flower heads for the birds. Will we get new sunflowers next year, a volunteer plant from one of those seeds? Perhaps... Sunny Things Happen!
Gouache is simply opaque watercolor with more body and texture than traditional, more transparent watercolors. In this multi-layered artwork, I let the gouache dry overnight, then went back into my painting and added a series of watercolor "glazes", transparent layers of color accents applied to selective passages in the artwork. This technique offers more complexity and much richer color, and you know how I love rich, vibrant color.
I sealed this piece with several coats of archival varnish, which keeps these colors vibrant and protected without the need for glazing under glass or acrylic. This protective, almost jewel-like surface treatment keeps the colors vibrant, and nothing distracting stands between you and the painting. It's backed with a non-reactive paper dustcover, wired and ready to hang, but its size makes it also suitable for display on a table easel or propped on a shelf wherever you need a breath of sunshine.

this miniature framed original is ready to bring a little sunlight indoors — whether it lands on a shelf, a small wall, or a nook that could use some good company. I think paintings like this are good for the soul. They don’t solve everything, but they do make the room feel a little kinder.
