In the harsh mountain climate of the southern Rocky Mountains, the trees often feel like gentle warriors or protectors. I have come to love certain of the trees around my home, standing like sentinals and warding off evil spirits.

This tree--the Protector-- is an aged pinon tree, right outside my window. It hosts hummingbirds, woodpeckers, tanagers, finches, and provides shade and shelter for the familys of deer that live nearby.

This piece offers a quiet moment of strength and calm, centered around a solitary pinon tree standing tall against the mountain landscape. The tree’s sturdy trunk and rich green canopy convey a sense of guardianship, as if it silently watches over the land and all who dwell nearby.

Soft yellow grasses stretch gently below, leading the eye toward distant hills shaded in cool purples and blues, creating a peaceful depth that invites contemplation. Above, a clear blue sky with delicate, wispy clouds enhances the tranquil mood, giving the scene an openness that soothes and reassures.

My hope is that in creating this piece, someone who needs protection may benefit from this powerful tree's presence.

Measuring 20 by 16 inches, this painting captures the enduring presence of nature’s tree protectors, inviting reflection on resilience and quiet care in the face of life’s challenges.
