ABOUT THE EDITION

Katy Dove participated in The Associates exhibition at DCA in 2009 and following this worked with DCA Print Studio to produce this suite of four new prints. These works form a series that the artist refers to as ‘Audio Visual Musical Forms’ – a title inspired by Norman McLaren’s 1967 publication, which issues a visual index for a range of established musical forms, blurring the boundaries between formal musical notations, diagrams, lettering and abstract form.

In these works Dove reinterprets McLaren’s approach, using a more open exploration of the relationships between sound, movement, text, colours and form. The result is a series of delicate visual manuscripts that are offered to us as layered sound palettes from which gestures of colour, textual annotations, texture and floating sound-forms emerge.
