This piece features the rose and geometric pattern woven into the damask tablecloth that I used for the background. Working with the image embedded in the cloth makes me feel connected to the designers and makers who created the cloth, as well as my great-grandmother, from whom I inherited the tablecloth. The tag in the lower right corner with 'ARN' printed on it is the dry cleaner's tag that was used to identify clients' laundry. Her last name was Arnold.

The stitch used for the rose is the Bayeux stitch, one of my favorites. It was developed almost 1000 years ago for use in the Bayeux Tapestry (actually an embroidery), which told the story of the battle of Hastings in England.
