In Fixed Point, Moving Sea, the artist explores the tension between motion and stillness, orientation and drift — a central theme in the ancestral art of wayfinding. A singular appliquéd circle anchors the composition, symbolizing the “fixed point”: a star, a compass, or an inner certainty. Around it, bands of woodblock-printed pattern evoke woven maps, ocean swells, and the structured knowledge passed through generations. The vertical arrangement suggests both mast and masthead — a reference to Hōkūleʻa and traditional voyaging canoes — and acts as a guidepost amid visual rhythm. This piece, part of McCaskill’s Waypoints series, draws from indigenous systems of navigation, pattern, and meaning, honoring the intelligence embedded in both the journey and the form. Here, the fixed point does not resist the sea — it exists within it, providing clarity not by stopping the motion, but by making it navigable.
