This piece explores how memories, relationships, and personal experiences become stories that shape our understanding of identity and community. Like Esperanza observing the lives around her, the artist reflects on the quiet moments, histories, and voices that are often overlooked but deserve to be remembered. The figure in the doorway represents Sandra Cisneros as a child, inspired by her reflections of sitting by the window at nine years old, writing and observing the world around her. The work honors her ability to preserve the stories of the women in her life, their struggles, dreams, and resilience, while exploring themes of independence, identity, and being seen. Textile and embroidery elements connect to traditions of women’s labor, storytelling, and the artist’s own background with fabric and weaving. Threads become a metaphor for the connections between memories, histories, and personal narratives. Each material reflects the idea that stories, like textiles and paper, are carefully created, preserved, and passed forward.
