Lichtenstein's "Airplane", 1977, was created as a prop for Kenneth Koch's three-act play, "The Red Robins", which was directed by Donald Sanders. Lichtenstein was one of several well-known artists of the time to contribute to the set design. Others included Alex Katz and Red Grooms.
The play was performed in New York on December 29–31, 1977 at P.S. 1, Long Island City, Queens, and January 10–11 (preview) and January 17–29, 1978, at Theater at St. Clement's, Manhattan. According to the catalogue raisonné entry for "Airplane", "The artist signed the work when the performances ended and donated it to help cover the cost of production."
