One of my reasons for making this particular painting, and others in this series, is that I want to draw our attention towards these kinds of things—objects as well as people—which are vitality important to our everyday lives, but generally go completely unnoticed. By painting these objects, I'm saying that they are worthy of our notice, worthy of our attention, and of our nurture.
I'm drawn to the shape of the thing; it's mechanical quality. I'm drawn to the contrasting materials of porcelain and metal; it's rough and the smooth textures. I'm drawn to the shadows in the threaded section. All around, I just think spark plugs are kind of cool looking. And this one is extra special, at least to me. It's the kind that powers my trusty motorbike for the past 100,000 miles.
I love painting objects for this simple reason; each object brings with it no only a long and wonderful history of it's past, the people and the places it's touched, but also it's brimming with an invitation and with possibilities for the future. Not to mention that these objects are just stunningly beautiful within themselves, works of art which deserved to be noticed and cherished.
