I paint the small moments of the Apostle Islands—the shifting light, reflections, trees, cliffs, and rapidly changing moods of Lake Superior. I am less interested in postcard views than in the instant when a place catches me by instinct.
Watercolor allows me to work with both looseness and intention, using color and contrast while leaving room for happy surprises. I want viewers to feel more than they see: the mood of a moment, a sense of awe, and the pull of a wild place that feels both ancient and alive.
Painting is meditative for me—a way of listening closely to the land and water and sharing something of their beauty, spirit, and mystery. I hope the work deepens an appreciation for the Apostle Islands as a place of extraordinary and irreplaceable beauty. More than that, I hope it strengthens the desire to protect, preserve, and carefully steward the wildness that makes these islands so unique.
