Robert Allen

I was born 150 miles inland from salt water. My parents worked hard and provided good food on the table and a respectable roof over our heads. A boat however was not to be. We were seemingly landlubbers but the lure of sailing ships was always on my mind. All of my life I have marveled at the beauty of a sailing ship. When I doodled in school it was always of what I envisioned as various sailboats. When I was 11 years old I built a model of a square rigged ship out of match sticks, about a thousand pieces. Although it was somewhat crude it was fairly accurate. I could draw almost any type of sailing ship.

One day as I was sitting with my mom I made the query that it seemed odd how distracted I was by the sea. She explained that it was in my blood. She shared with me that my grandmothers siblings were ship fitters from Newfoundland, and further that my great grandfathers sister on my fathers side married a Halsey. As it turns out I'm a direct descendent of Admiral William F, Halsey.

Maritime history runs through my veins and I express myself with oils on canvas.
