Years ago, while walking through a shallow gorge searching for fossils with my children, I encountered an upended tree. It had been ripped upward while all around it trees stood unaffected, as though there had been a localized earthquake. Roots flailing in all directions, the trunk lay with a gaping maw, a massive portal seemed to have opened through its core, dark but on closer inspection full of life. The scene remained with me. I painted that tree many times, wild and unabashed in its new avatar. When menopause came calling this painting emerged over an afternoon of dwelling on the life that exists even when parts of us are ‘dying’. Me-no-pause was my playful acceptance of a new phase in life.
