Small portrait-head jar. 1/2-1/3 life size. Generalized features, eyes being oval in shape, but prominent nose giving the pot an impression of individuality. Headdress of four undecorated bands which are topped by the flaring rim of the jar. Nodules with holes at joint of head and rim suggest pot might have been carried on rope or twine in some fashion. Earrings of four semi-round balls. Details of headdress, ear ornaments are all significant in establishing rank. Alan Sawyer notes that Mochic Ceramic styles were essentially realistic: ceramics of this period reflected the individual. The portrait-head vessel, most unusual and perhaps best known type of Mochic Culture. This particular vessel is not highly polished, although rim shows traces of polished surfaces.
