This is the last painting I finished in 2021!
The canvas was created at the same time as four other works, “Screen Captured”

All of them started out with the same red and cream-colored paint. This is the last painting I finished in 2021!
For this work I wanted to have a playful child-like motif. During this portion of the process, I ended up bolting on a broken action figure. I broke a lot of toys as a boy. This was one I found while walking around years before. I don’t like to make those found objects the center of attention though, rather I use them like a cook adds a little spice to liven up a dish. Unfortunately, the painting was just spice and no dish at this stage. I set the work aside while I completed other paintings. When I would leave my studio, I would look back at it to try to imprint the unfinished image on my brain for inspiration.
It's funny how creative ideas come to be. Growing up I enjoyed making paper airplanes and watching them fly. Not surprisingly, the paper airplane motif came to mind. I liked the simplicity of the yellow line and the playfulness of the iconic toy plane. Still, it wasn’t enough to make the painting complete. It wasn't until one fall evening when I was walking with my wife that the idea of having the paper plane amongst the scattered leaves came to be. It still took some effort to get the color of the leaves to a place that I felt made it balanced. I admit, I struggled with this one; I’m happy how it all came together though.
Can you find the broken Batman toy and the end of the shoelace?
Finding one is much easier than the other.
