At the age of 7, my life took a drastic turn after a near-fatal car accident caused by my excess energy and disobedience. I am grateful to my parents and the medical attention in Cuba for preserving my life.
This event marked a radical shift in my perspective; I began to observe the world in a deeper way, capturing previously unnoticed details.
I developed an intense need to capture and take ownership of my surroundings, evolving from simple words to visual expression. My parents and older brother supported my passion, taking me to artistic events, providing materials, and nurturing my happiness. Although I participated in numerous contests without recognition, my thirst for capturing the environment was insatiable.
At the age of 11, my parents informed me about an art school where I could cultivate my talent. Initially confused by the term "art," I was intrigued by the idea of learning to paint and understand my creativity.
Entering the school was not easy; I faced a rigorous entrance exam with fierce competition. With determination, I prepared, and at the age of 11, I began my journey in the arts.
My years of study were challenging, with intense academic demands and competition among peers. I learned to understand my motivations, although the meaning of the terms "art" and "artist" still eluded my comprehension.
During those years, the country was facing its most challenging and harsh economic period, following the collapse of the socialist bloc in Eastern Europe. Life in Cuba became so tough that people were almost dying from hunger and diseases due to the lack of food. Alongside my family, we headed to the countryside to harvest food and ensure our sustenance, thanks to the assistance of my paternal grandfather. At that time, he had spaces where we could cultivate and obtain the necessary resources to feed ourselves.
At 22, I completed my studies and faced the beginning of my professional career, a bewildering stage. I persisted in painting and teaching painting for the same school that shaped me. Years of experimentation and collaboration with other artists and students enriched my creative development. Participating in collective exhibitions brought me recognition, and I finally understood the essence of art and my role as an artist.
My fascination with Renaissance masters, Impressionism, and Post-Impressionism, especially Vincent van Gogh, was one of my favorites; I spent hours looking at his paintings. Joaquín Sorolla, among Spanish painters, dazzled me with the light and freshness of his works. Toulouse-Lautrec, with his drawings and paintings reflecting the character of a turbulent society in those years. On the other hand, Russian artists like Ilyá Repin and Valentín Serov, with their mastery of painting and the power of their works, were a great inspiration for me.
In a few years, I started visiting Europe and got to know contemporary German artists who were not well-known in Cuba at the time. I was fascinated by what they were doing, seeing it directly in museums. Gerhard Richter, with an impressive artwork that still inspires me today. Anselm Kiefer, with his giant artworks and everything behind them. Joseph Beuys, although a performance artist, always inspired me with his methodology of developing the artwork and the materials he used.
Also, American artists closer to me, like Andy Warhol, greatly influenced my own work. Paul McCarthy, an artist from Los Angeles whom I follow closely for his gigantic installations where there is everything, and the way he presents his work is incredible, addressing very political themes.
I established connections with Denmark through a gallery that still represents my work. These travels enriched my worldview, highlighting the universality of the human experience.
Over the years, my artwork has been exhibited globally by galleries, art fairs, and is part of private collections in many countries around the world.
Today, I reside in Lima, Peru, after finding love, who is now my wife. With three children who have completely transformed my existence, filling me with much happiness. My desire is to instill strong human values in them and encourage them to live their lives pursuing their true passions, always seeking what brings them satisfaction and makes them feel free.
With my artwork, I aim to establish a connection with a diverse audience. My fervent wish is that people, regardless of their background or intellectual level, experience something meaningful when contemplating my art. My goal goes beyond mere visual contemplation; I seek for each piece to serve as a portal to moments of reflection and teachings that add value to the experience as the human beings we are.
