This new series is inspired equally by basic research concepts, cultural politics and spirituality.
It is an ongoing production of work that is driven by the exploration of constants and variables. Each new painting is a repetition of one constant--to create an illusion of emptiness by the use of simple lines to suggest edges and frame a blank space. The central variables are color and application. Color and brushwork vary in each canvas illuminating the breathtaking variety of empty space.
These paintings also address cultural politics because they invite the viewer to tolerate emptiness. By so doing they become a visual environment that is an alternative to the multitude of visual stimuli that every day bombards, seduces, captures and holds our eyes. Inducing beauty-greed and the impulse to possess is the object of today's commercial world, where everything is for sale. These paintings, on the other hand, invite the viewer to stay with the discomfort of bare bones solitude.
If the viewer chooses to stay in the presence of this work, then these paintings are finally a spiritual place, a place of emptiness, a void. As such each painting is a meditation space -- a place to observe the ebb and flow of mind and a place to practice the finding and loosing of self.
