The whooping crane (*Grus americana*) is the tallest bird in North America and one of the most iconic symbols of wildlife conservation on the continent, standing nearly five feet tall with a wingspan stretching up to eight feet. Its plumage is a brilliant, snow-white with striking black wingtips that are most visible in flight, and the adult's bare facial skin is adorned with a vivid red cap and a black mask that gives the bird an intense, regal expression. Its common name comes from its powerful, far-carrying bugling call, which mated pairs perform in elaborate unison duets that can be heard from miles away. The whooping crane breeds in the remote boreal wetlands of Wood Buffalo National Park in northern Canada and migrates nearly 2,500 miles each way to winter along the Gulf Coast of Texas at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge — one of the longest migrations of any North American bird. Once driven to the brink of extinction, with the wild population plummeting to just 15 birds in 1941, decades of intensive conservation efforts, including captive breeding, egg fostering, and the use of ultralight aircraft to teach captive-raised birds their migration routes, have slowly brought the species back, with the wild population now numbering in the hundreds, though it remains critically endangered.
