The Scarlet Macaw (*Ara macao*) is one of the most visually stunning birds on Earth, native to the humid evergreen forests of Central and South America, ranging from southern Mexico down to Bolivia and Brazil. It is a large parrot, typically measuring around 32 inches from beak to tail, with a wingspan that can reach nearly three feet. Its plumage is dominated by brilliant scarlet red across the body and head, accented by vivid yellow and blue on the wings — a combination that makes it one of the most recognizable birds in the world. Scarlet Macaws are highly intelligent and social creatures, often seen in noisy flocks and forming strong, lifelong pair bonds with their mates. They use their powerful, hooked beaks to crack open hard nuts and seeds, which make up a large part of their diet alongside fruits and flowers. They are also known for their ability to mimic human speech, which, combined with their striking beauty, has made them popular — though demanding — pets. Unfortunately, habitat destruction and the illegal pet trade have put pressure on wild populations, though the species is currently listed as Least Concern overall, with some regional populations facing greater threats.
