The malachite butterfly (Siproeta stelenes) is a large, strikingly colored butterfly found from the southern United States through Mexico, Central America, and into South America, named for its distinctive pale green and black wing pattern that resembles the green mineral malachite. Its wings display an intricate mosaic of translucent, mint-to-yellowish-green patches set against black borders and veining, with the underside showing a more muted, mottled brown and tan pattern that provides camouflage when the wings are closed. Malachites favor forest edges, clearings, and tropical hammocks, where adults are relatively slow, gliding fliers often seen feeding on rotting fruit, tree sap, and occasionally flower nectar rather than relying primarily on floral sources like many other butterflies. The caterpillars are dark, spiny, and feed on plants in the Acanthaceae family, particularly Ruellia species, and the species is known for a relatively long adult lifespan compared to many butterflies, with individuals sometimes living several months. In the United States, malachites are found mainly in southern Florida and Texas, where they are considered an exciting find for butterfly enthusiasts due to their striking, almost artificial-looking coloration.
