The North American bobcat (*Lynx rufus*) is a medium-sized wild cat found throughout much of the United States, southern Canada, and northern Mexico, adapted to a wide range of habitats including forests, deserts, swamps, and even suburban edges. It's easily recognized by its tawny to grayish-brown coat with dark spots or streaks, tufted ears, a ruffed face, and its namesake short, "bobbed" tail tipped in black. Bobcats are solitary, territorial, and primarily nocturnal or crepuscular hunters, relying on stealth and a powerful pounce to catch rabbits, hares, rodents, and birds, though larger individuals will occasionally take deer. They're skilled climbers and swimmers when needed, and despite their adaptability and widespread population, they remain elusive and are rarely seen by humans. The species is currently classified as Least Concern, with a stable population estimated in the hundreds of thousands across North America.
