The Barred Owl (*Strix varia*) is a large, round-headed owl native to eastern North America, with a range that has expanded significantly westward into the Pacific Northwest over the past century, where it has become a serious ecological concern due to competition with the endangered Spotted Owl. It is a handsome, stocky bird standing about 43–60 cm (17–24 inches) tall, with soft, mottled brown and white plumage featuring distinctive horizontal barring across the upper chest and vertical brown streaking on the belly — the pattern that gives the species its name. Unlike many owls, it has dark brown, almost black eyes rather than yellow ones, giving it a gentle, soulful expression. The Barred Owl is perhaps best known for its remarkably expressive and far-carrying call, a rhythmic hooting phrase memorably rendered as "Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you-all?", which echoes through forests, swamps, and wooded river bottoms — particularly at night but sometimes during the day as well. It is a habitat generalist, favoring mature mixed forests near water, where it hunts a wide variety of prey including mice, voles, squirrels, rabbits, frogs, fish, and even crayfish, often hunting from a perch and dropping silently onto its quarry. Highly territorial and strongly attached to its home range, a mated pair will often occupy the same territory for life, and their duetting calls — a chaotic, almost maniacal cacophony sometimes described as "caterwauling" — are one of the most evocative sounds of the North American night forest.
