The American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) resting is a common and iconic sight in the wetlands of the southeastern United States, where these large reptiles are frequently observed basking motionless on riverbanks, mudflats, or floating logs to regulate their body temperature through thermoregulation, since as ectotherms they rely on external heat sources rather than internal metabolism. While resting, an alligator often lies with its mouth agape, a behavior called "gaping" that helps dissipate excess heat much like panting in mammals, and its dark, rugged, armor-like skin allows it to blend seamlessly into muddy banks and shadowy vegetation while remaining nearly motionless for extended periods. Despite this apparent stillness and sluggish appearance, resting alligators remain highly alert, capable of exploding into rapid motion within seconds if prey or a threat comes within range, a stark contrast between their languid resting posture and their sudden bursts of speed and power.
