My View from 11514 grew out of the unusual intersection between David Heatwole's working life as a professional truck driver and his continuing life as an artist. Created over a period of approximately six months, the small painting transforms the view from inside his Volvo semi-truck into something far removed from an ordinary day on the road.
Seen from the driver's perspective, the truck's interior opens onto an imagined world where flowers and a hummingbird emerge beyond the windshield. The everyday environment of work becomes a point of departure for another reality—a place shaped as much by imagination and artistic longing as by what is physically present.
Part of Heatwole's Shifting Planes series, the painting plays with the boundary between observed reality and imagined experience. Interior and exterior, work and creativity, confinement and freedom begin to occupy the same visual space.
There is also something autobiographical about the work. Heatwole was literally creating art from within the environment of his day-to-day occupation. The truck became both workplace and, at times, studio. My View from 11514 captures that tension while suggesting that imagination is capable of opening another plane of experience regardless of where an artist happens to be.
