Held CL02, comes out of Ground Work, my series of paintings made from cut and restitched secondhand clothing. Here the same process is applied to an object. Two vintage wood clamps, tools built to hold things together under pressure, are wrapped in hosiery, stitched shut by hand with sashiko thread, and repaired duct tape and staples.

Sashiko is the running stitch Japanese households used to reinforce and mend worn cloth, the stitch behind Boro. Using it to seal a tool reverses the roles: the thing made to hold is now held. Its function is suspended, but its shape stays legible under a skin of fabric. The hosiery, a garment shaped by a body no longer present, becomes a membrane over someone else's labor.

The work is about what we inherit and how we tend it. Broken things, held together, carried forward.
