This small watercolor is among the few watercolor works done by the artist over a 40 plus year lifespan. Fewer than 5 watercolors are known to have been created, as the vast majority of Dan's work is in oil or acrylic. However, this work shows his mastery even in the lyrical medium of watercolor. The scene was painted on location in Puerto Escondito, Mexico during one of his multiple trips to the exotic beach loved by the local tourists from the nearby city of Oaxaca. The fishing boat Rita, rests on the beach overlooking the Pacific after it's early morning run where the daily catch of Redfish, shrimp, jack, or whatever's biting that day is brought to the beachfront restaurants who cook it up fresh the very same day. This painting captures the peaceful, tropical vibe enfused with a sense of romance. My younger son was conceived in a thatched room overlooking that very view the day the painting was created.
