About the artist

Yvonne Stubbs

Eugene based multimedia artist, Yvonne Stubbs, was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. Her mother survived the 1948 Columbia River flood in Vanport, an area between the contemporary Portland city boundary and the Columbia River where many African American families lived. At an early age she was fascinated with color, drawing and the stories her community shared to keep connected and transfer knowledge. Through visual storytelling, she uses painting, sculpture and various mediums to share her experience as an African American woman and to educate her community, family and friends about the hidden and lost histories of African Americans. She is a first-generation college graduate and attended Portland Community College, Lane Community College and the University of Oregon where she received two BFAs, in painting and sculpture, and a Master of Fine Arts.
