Pictorialism emerged in the 1890s, combining advances in photographic printmaking with the influence of Impressionism. Characterized by soft focus and atmospheric imagery, the movement helped establish photography as a fine art form. Colorado photographer R. Ewing Stiffler contributed to this movement in the early twentieth century. His work, preserved by the Colorado Photographic Arts Center, was last exhibited extensively at the Denver Art Museum in 1935.
