I am a photographer and writer with a background in science and technology, living in Coronado, California.
I enjoy all types of photography, but especially abstract photography in color and architectural photography in black and white. I write photo essays covering a range of
photography-related topics.
I developed an interest in photography as a graduate student, but my enthusiasm waxed and waned over the years as family responsibilities and other priorities competed for my time. A few years ago I decided to buy a professional quality camera and take photography more seriously. Since then my photographic interests have grown and merged with my enjoyment of writing. I use Leica cameras and L-mount lenses, and shoot photographs in both color and black & white.
Originally from Wales, I recently retired after a long career in drug discovery at both major pharma and start-up biotech companies. I studied Chemistry at Imperial College, London, and hold a PhD in Organic Chemistry from Cambridge University. I spent spent two years as a NATO postdoctoral fellow and Fulbright-Hays travel scholar at Stanford University in California and Columbia University in New York.
I worked at Pfizer twenty-nine years, leading research units in both the UK and the US, spent three years as a visiting investigator at The Scripps Research Institute, and was President of the Ferring Research Institute in San Diego for seven years. My most recent role was as Senior Vice-President of Drug Discovery at a San Francisco Bay Area-based biotech company, insitro, applying machine learning to the challenges of discovering new medicines.

C3 Gallery Exhibition: "Heads-up"
People are the ultimate, endlessly fascinating artistic subject, are they not? Portraits, through their emphasis on the face, provide an especially intimate example of the three-way transaction between artist, artwork, and art lover.
Candid photographic portraits capture fleeting facial expressions or postures seen in everyday situations, conveying a glimpse of the real person being photographed.
My photographs, both candid and posed, are attempts to capture the personality of the subject. In monochrome, they focus on the person rather than their surroundings. A number of them are musicians, immersed in their art and transported to another world.
