About the artist

Xenobia Bailey

b. 1955

Xenobia Bailey started her career as a costume designer for Black Arts/West. She then received a bachelor's of fine arts degree from the Pratt Institute, and then went to the University of Washington to study ethnomusicology. Later, she took tailoring ans millinery courses at Seattle Central Community College.

Xenobia focuses on ancient African styles, reviving undocumented designs from contemporary rural and urban homemakers. She wishes to design experimental, nature-based, futuristic, and sustainable material culture using funk aesthetics. Her work includes costumes, hats, wall pieces, and digital images. Xenobia's larger works are crocheted, colorful concentric circles.
