Johanna Bermúdez-Ruiz is an Award-Winning artist, writer, and director, producer with 20 years of film industry experience whose work has been seen worldwide. Johanna’s film legacy includes her Award-Winning Films: SUGAR PATHWAYS, VIEQUES: AN ISLAND FORGING FUTURES, FORGOTTEN IN PARADISE, and SOLÉNE. Johanna is the principal of Cane Bay Films, LLC in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, with a satellite office in New York City.

 

In recognition of her extensive contribution to preserving the culture and history of Vieques, Puerto Rico, through her film VIEQUES: AN ISLAND FORGING FUTURES, New York State Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell IV honored Johanna with a Proclamation. This NYC Proclamation is one of many honors and awards she has received throughout her career for her film contributions that shed light on human rights, equality, and social responsibility issues. Ms. Bermúdez-Ruiz was invited by the Congressional Black Caucus and the

Congressional Hispanic Caucus to present her documentary film, “Sugar Pathways”, at the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center’s Theater.

 

Additionally, the famed Interpublic Group’s (NYSE: IPG) Hispanic/Latino Heritage Group, SOMOS, in partnership with their colleagues from IPG’s Multicultural Employee Resource Groups for Excellence (MERGE), celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a Gala Reception and Private Screening of Johanna Bermúdez-Ruiz’s documentary film “Sugar Pathways” at Tribeca Cinemas in New York City.

Rutgers University, Bernard College and other academic institutions utilizes “Sugar Pathways in their academic curriculum as an educational tool in their programming.

She has received awards and accolades from the Dominican Republic’s Outfest Film Festival, New York City’s ImageNation Film Festival, Cuba’s Havana Film Festival (Festival de Cine de La Habana), Puerto Rico’s San Juan Cinemafest Film Festival and among many international honors.

 

Johanna has an Interdisciplinary Studies degree focusing on Film, Communications, Women, and Cultural Studies from Antioch College, Ohio; In addition, she has studied film theory and Photography at The American International University in London, UK. 

 

Ms. Bermúdez-Ruiz is currently producing her Independent-Hollywood, international feature film, "Silent Drift," a romantic thriller to be filmed on St. Croix. She is proud of the Prestigious Ensemble of Actors, the Academy Acclaimed crew, and Executive Producers from U.S.A., Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Latin America, and Europe who are excited to travel to St. Croix and work with the esteemed Filmmaker.
