About the artist

Kelly Ording

Kelly Ording is interested in the tonal and textural possibilities of a surface. She begins her compositions by hand-dying paper or canvas, creating a surface that offsets the precision of bold tones and meticulous line. Central to her work is radiating color, repetitive shapes, and intricate patterns.

Ording uses the word "meditative" to describe the process of line-making. Her slow, methodical repetition of lines becomes a way of marking the passage of time. Kelly Ording’s paintings also engage with color theory, exploring qualities of color through evolving patterns and subtle tonal variations.

Ording's public works and murals are displayed in San Francisco's Clarion Alley, Unity Plaza, the headquarters of Facebook and Genentech, as well as other locations throughout the Bay Area and world. Her work is featured in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), the San Francisco Arts Commission Public and Civic Art, the Alameda County Arts Commission, and JP Morgan Chase.
