Nuestra Snra. del Rosario from the collection of Blackfriars Gallery and Library

Nuestra Snra. del Rosario, 18th century Cusco School

Oil On Canvas

Provenance unknown. The figures around the permiter of the painting are: St. Joseph (upper left), St. Anthony of Padua (upper right), St. Jerome (lower left), St. Francis of Paola (middle-right), and St. Ursula (lower right). The figure on the middle-left presents a challenge due to the lack of recognizable attributes beyond the black rosary around his neck, his prayer posture, and the tear in his left eye. In the larger context of this painting, he could be St. Nicholas of Tolentino (1245-1305), a member of the Order of St. Augustine and patron of souls in purgatory.

Thanks to Dr. Almerindo E. Ojeda of Project for the Engraved Sources of Spanish Colonial Art (PESSCA), Fr. Augustine Thompson, OP, and Dr. Barbara Gordley for guidance in identification of these figures.
