“Windswept, Killarney” captures one of the most enduring images of the Canadian Shield: a lone pine, its branches thrown permanently sideways by prevailing winds, rooted defiantly in pink granite along the shore of Killarney Provincial Park. Chris James Cooper renders the tree with expressive, gestural brushwork — its wind-carved form nearly calligraphic against a pale, atmospheric sky — while the warm rose and umber tones of the wind-worn rock anchor the composition with quiet weight. A still band of water below offers a soft, muted reflection of both stone and tree. The painting reflects Cooper’s lifelong fascination, both as artist and ecologist, with the way this landscape’s harshest forces shape its most striking beauty.
