Omowale Stewart

Omowale Stewart is a self-taught Bajan-Caribbean artist, whose journey was profoundly shaped by the Black Caribbean Movement of the 1960s and ’70s. His work, deeply rooted in cultural identity and artistic innovation, is celebrated for its distinctive style, expressive line work, and bold use of color—each piece crafted to captivate the eye, mind, and soul.

With a career spanning decades, Omowale has exhibited extensively across the Caribbean, North America, and Europe, leaving an indelible mark on the regional and international art scene. His work has been showcased at esteemed institutions, including:

• Barbados: Queen’s Park Gallery, Frank Collymore Hall, UWI Cave Hill

• Trinidad & Tobago: Art Creators Gallery

• Jamaica: Creative Arts Center, UWI Mona

• USA: OAS Museum (Washington D.C.), New Orleans Jazz Festival, Gallery Caribe & Drexel University (Philadelphia)

Among his most notable works are portraits of Caribbean icons, including Kamau Brathwaite, Bob Marley, National Hero Errol Barrow, and Miss Universe 1998, Wendy Fitzwilliams.

Today, Omowale continues to push artistic boundaries, creating pieces that are not only visually striking but also intellectually and emotionally profound. His art is an evolving dialogue between past and present—an invitation to experience the spirit of the Caribbean through his masterful strokes.
