About the artist

Asher Mains

Asher Mains, born in 1984, is a Grenadian artist whose work is deeply rooted in the materials and narratives of the Caribbean. He employs locally sourced elements such as sea fans and banana fibers to explore themes of identity, memory, and place. Mains believes that the materials used in art can evoke empathy and memory, creating connections that are both personal and inclusive.
His artistic journey includes an MFA in Creative Practice from the Transart Institute, UK, and ongoing Ph.D. studies in Philosophy, Art, and Critical Thought at the European Graduate School. Beyond his personal practice, Mains contributes to the art community as president of Grenada Arts Council, director at Art House 473, and founding Art School Greenz, an alternative art school in Grenada.

Mains' work has been showcased internationally, including at the Venice Biennale and the 14th la Bienal de Habana, where his piece "Sea Lungs" featured sea fans as a central element. His "Painted Portraits for Cocoa Farmers" project highlights his commitment to local subjects while engaging with global art dialogues.
