THE STORY BEHIND THE ART
This composition of the full moon setting just past the sea stacks at Cannon Beach, Oregon, USA, took some major planning: be there on a full moon when moonset fell into the border between "blue hour" and "golden hour" of pre-dawn, a low—but not too low—outgoing tide… and weather that offered a decent mix of clouds.
Sometimes in life, you don't get everything you planned; in landscape photography, you can be lucky if you even get something. This particular shot was serendipitous, as I expected that the clear skies would make for a rather plain backdrop. How nice it is when you're wrong in the right way.
In this situation, I'd resigned myself to thinking that the cloudless sky would mean my efforts were for not. But my limited ability to perceive much of anything in the virtually black sky upon my arrival on the beach meant that the fog sitting offshore was hidden from my view. As the moon crept closer to the horizon and black of deep night began to turn to violet and blue, I realized I was in for a treat: the fog belt sitting above the cresting waves softened the light even more, resulting in the most delicate transition of high frequency colors.
The resulting image takes full advantage of my medium format camera: the range of color in both sky and reflecting on the water, the hint of a glow from the almost-risen sun behind me giving the sea stacks just enough features, the deep blue pool of water sitting languidly in the foreground… it's outcomes like this that make all the planning and effort so worth it.
