"Enlightenment the Hard Way" is a significant piece created during an artist residency at the Contemporary Artists Center Woodside in Troy, New York. This 50 x 42 inch acrylic painting on canvas represents a pivotal moment in the artist's early career, marked by both personal and artistic challenges.
During the residency, the artist faced the pressure of being surrounded by other American artists, many of whom were early in their careers and held advanced degrees. Despite facing some dismissive attitudes, this period encouraged deeper reflection and growth in the artist’s work.
This painting stands out as a favorite among the series produced during the residency. It bridges the gap between the artist's earlier, more structured compositions and the later, more fluid and gestural pieces. The vibrant composition features bold brushwork, dynamic lines, and spontaneous forms, capturing the evolution of the artist's style.
"Enlightenment the Hard Way" reflects the artist’s journey of self-discovery and the transition towards a more expressive and liberated approach to painting. It offers a glimpse into the emotional and technical development that has shaped the artist’s practice.
