Bożenna Biskupska (born 1952, Warsaw, Poland) is a Polish multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, sculpture, installation, video, and performance. Her work traces a continuous formal evolution from figurative representation through abstraction toward a highly personal visual language. Central to her artistic inquiry are questions of time, the organization and demarcation of space, and the enduring presence of the human trace. Line, sign and mark form the essential vocabulary of her practice, while her experimental approach to materials, including concrete, marble dust, negative film, and linseed oil, reflects a sustained exploration of the relationship between painting and sculpture.
The Cage series, initiated in 1992, occupies a pivotal place within Biskupska’s oeuvre. Composed of works distinguished by varied textures, relief surfaces, and intersecting linear structures, the series explores the division and construction of pictorial space. Individual compositions function both autonomously and in dialogue with one another, creating sequences based on complementarity or contrast. While the earliest works retained figurative elements, from 1994 onward the series increasingly embraced large-scale abstract colour fields enriched by tactile surfaces. In its later stages, Biskupska’s Cage series became more restrained, with simplified linear structures and a palette dominated by white and grey. Through rhythm, repetition, cyclical structures, and the recurring motifs of the line and trace, these works investigate the ways in which human presence is inscribed within time and space, transforming the painted surface into a both physical and conceptual field of experience.
