Sam Wróbel is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Lafayette, LA, who specializes in the Polish folk art of papercutting, wycinanki. He learned wycinanki from Chicago artist Doris Sikorsky through two master/apprentice grants in ethnic arts from the Illinois Arts Council in 1998 and 2000. Rooted in cultural preservation, but not bound by traditional themes, his work explores nature, queer identity, Louisiana culture, and grief while keeping a dying folk tradition alive. His work has appeared in numerous group and solo exhibitions, including Cut It Out: Papermaking Traditions and Beyond at the Racine Museum of Art. He is an active member of the Guild of American Papercutters, as well as the Lafayette-based art collective Archives Exhibitions, and teaches art through the Acadiana Center for the Arts.
