Cherrystone Drop Snail by Barbara J Zipperer

A shell can hold so much more than a shape—it can hold a sense of place, memory, and wonder. I’m drawn to subjects like this because they invite a closer look. The details reveal themselves slowly, and that’s often where the magic is. What kind of mood does this piece bring to you?

"Cherrystone Drop Snail" is an exquisitely detailed artwork that captures the delicate essence of an endangered snail species found in the Northeast Wisconsin Land Trust Preserves. Measuring 10x9.5 inches, this piece skillfully employs colored pencils on black paper to bring the subject to life.

The focal point of the piece is a close-up view of a snail shell, noteworthy for its intricate patterns and rich, mixed hues. Primarily blue with subtle hints of brown and white, the shell's natural spiral design is rendered with an impressive attention to detail. The vibrant and earthy background tones—greens, yellows, and browns—though abstract in form, evoke a sense of the snail's natural habitat, enhancing the overall aesthetic without overwhelming the main subject.

This artwork stands out not only for its visual appeal but also for the unique inspiration behind it. The snail depicted is notably small, about the size of a lady's pinkie fingertip, and its elusive nature adds to the charm and rarity captured in the image. Published in the inaugural issue of "Salann Magazine" in 2019, this piece blends realism with a touch of abstraction, celebrating the natural beauty and intricate design of its tiny subject.
