Sky Through Live Oak
The California Live Oak is a keystone species that supports 270 mammal, bird and insect species by providing food, shelter and shade. Native Californians harvested the acorns for food. The twisted branches show that these trees are resilient, continuing to grow through whatever happens in life. They stay green throughout the year, growing new leaves as they lose some, rather than losing them all in the Fall as other Oak trees do - that's why these are called Live Oaks.
I created this view looking up at the sky through the Live Oak's branches because even when something obscures your view, you can still look up and see the blue sky.
Living in Southern California I appreciate these trees which provide shade when I hike. I created this quilt by cutting small pieces of solid-colored fabric and stitching them together on my sewing machine. Once the whole picture was pieced together, I layered it on top of batting and stitched with colored thread through the layers to add bark and leaves with stitched lines
