This piece is a tribute to my ongoing work in the area of youth literacy. Through the Donald Harrison Museum and Cultural Center's signature program, Big Chief Donald Harrison, Sr. Book Program, over 40,000 new books have been distributed to area children. The goal of the program is to enhance children's love of reading and academic achievement. My late husband, read over 40 books a year and always gave books as gifts. The program was conceived to honor his memory and legacy. As an 84 year old, I cannot maintain the program as it has occurred in the past due to the pandemic and my advanced age. However, I want this piece in some way to be part of the legacy of the program.

Herreast J. Harrison

Herreast J. Harrison, is a mother of four, fifth-generation quilter, an accomplished beadwork and quilt artist, curator, and co-founder of Guardians Institute, a New Orleans non-profit. In addition to her artwork being exhibited, she has curated exhibitions globally. Her honors include; LEH’s Light Up for Literacy, and the 2021 Ashé Cultural Arts Center’s Grand Griot.

Through the Big Chief Donald Harrison, Sr. Book Club, Harrison has gifted more than 40,000 new books to children. She remains active at 85 years old; she is currently curating an exhibition at the state capital featuring women and girls’ ceremonial attire.
