MSP Terminal 2, Ticketing Lobby
October 2025 - August 2026
Window Watchers is a series of paintings that capture quiet, introspective moments of individuals gazing from their windows, watching life unfold beyond their private worlds. The windows function as symbolic thresholds that bridge the public and private realms, offering a subtle exploration of how we navigate personal identities within a shared world.
Painted just under life-sized, the figures evoke responses of identification and curiosity while the paintings themselves explore the back-and-forth exchange between looking out at the world and being seen by others. Viewers become participants in this exchange as they engage with and affirm the unique individuality of those they observe.
The transitory and communal environment of MSP International Airport offers a fitting setting for this kind of psychological engagement. Here, the act of pausing and watching becomes a shared experience sparking connection across distance and differences.
The series began during the artist’s many years living in Germany and was widely exhibited there. In 2025, the series expanded to include scenes of Minnesota residents. Window Watchers continues to remind us that every window has two sides, and that art can open both.
About the artist
Raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, Barbara Lidfors’ early exposure to art grew into a lifelong vocation. Beginning as a child at a kitchen table scattered with paints and pencils, she would eventually earn her MFA in 2001. She has since exhibited widely across Europe and beyond. Her work celebrates the beauty and meaning found in everyday human situations, inviting viewers to pause to engage more deeply with the life around them.
