Minneapolis-based Dennis Kalow invites audiences to look beyond recognizable objects and consider his sculptures as explorations of form itself. His works may suggest familiar things, but their primary subjects are the relations among shape, line, color, and texture. Rather than relying on literal or historical references, Kalow aims for each sculpture to communicate through its visual qualities and to stand independently as a complete statement. They encourage viewers to consider their emotional responses that occur as if through an alchemy of form and material. What meanings arise through observation of their forms?
Arts@MSP welcomes travelers to experience this selection of Kalow’s sculptures as individual visual encounters where curiosity and imagination can take precedence over interpretation.
About the artist
For more than fifty years, Minneapolis artist Dennis Kalow has explored the possibilities of making and teaching art. His early work centered on clay and pottery, before a twelve-year career in architecture shifted his attention toward historic buildings, design, and hands-on construction. In 2017, Kalow returned to sculpture as a full-time artist, drawn to the challenges of three-dimensional design and the seemingly endless possibilities of materials.
