About the artist

Dmitri Kessel

Ukrainian

1902-1995

Born in Kiev, Ukraine in 1902, Dmitri Kessel was a titan of photojournalism for over sixty years, including over three decades as a defining global eye for Life magazine. After emigrating to the United States and honing his craft in industrial photography, he became a frontline witness to 20th-century history. His work is in every major photography museum globally and in collections worldwide.

Kessel was celebrated for his immense versatility, seamlessly transitioning from the grit of the Greek Civil War and the liberation of concentration camps to elegant features on European art and architecture. Often working on months-long assignments for Life, his work blended a courageous spirit with a sophisticated sense of composition, capturing the raw tension of global conflict alongside the quiet beauty of the human experience. He died in Long Island , NY in 1995.
