Inspired by the various species of whales being cruelly hunted. Inspired by Captain Paul Watson ("Whale Wars") who has worked tirelessly for decades to stop the illegal whaling by Japan, Iceland, and Norway. Whales are dying at alarming rate and there is no justification for harpooning these gentle creatures. Used masking tape to create a border, and to leave visible the previous layer. Took a painting that i was not yet satisfied with, taped around the edges (a technique i learned from my instructor Norman Goodwin in Norfolk, VA, 2011-2012), and "scumbled" (a technique i learned from instructor Anne Iott at Tidewater Community College, Virginia Beach ca. 1978) the blue gray "stormy" colors over the underpainting. Left the sun visible (upper left yellow rectangle).
This is the finished piece (2017), begun in 2010. i chose not to crop this image yet, and left some of the background visible.
